Master of Photography Degree from PPA

I’m proud to have received my Master of Photography degree from PPA at Imaging USA this year.

Presented by PPA President Stephen Thetford, the degree indicates that I have met the standards of excellence set by PPA. The degree is awarded in recognition of superior photographic competence demonstrated through photographic competition, advanced education and service to the profession.

Along with my Photographic Craftsman degree, I feel this helps set me apart as not just another guy on the internet with a camera, but someone who has demonstrated excellence and has been recognized as such in the industry.

Three Photo Industry Awards for 2018

I was pretty excited to receive three awards at the annual banquet for the Oregon Professional Photographers Association this year.

I was named the Commercial/Illustrative Division WinnerTechnical Excellence in the large year-end competition.

Finally, the plaque shown above is a high honor indeed: the PPA National Award. This award is given for service to the photography industry, and was presented to me by 2018-2019 PPA President Stephen Thetford. I’m truly honored to join the relatively small number of photographers nationwide who have received this honor, and am thankful that I’ve been able help give back to the industry and help others along the photographic path.

2017 Year-End OPPA Awards

As 2017 winds down, I was recently honored with a couple awards at the annual banquet of the Oregon Professional Photographers Association. The main two OPPA awards I received were for an image that did well in our annual state image competition in November.

See the Forest for the Trees

See the Forest for the Trees started with an image captured near Denali National Park in Alaska, edited and presented as such. It received an award for the best Landscape/Pictorial image as well as a Judge’s Choice award. Here I am receiving the Best Landscape award with OPPA Vice President Lisa Dillon, and with the group of folks who all received Judge’s Choice awards.

OPPA Awards - Judges Choice Winners

This past year was also a notable one as I served as the President of OPPA, leading the state’s largest industry organization and overseeing a variety of events and competitions. While it was a great year overall, a few notable accomplishments stand out including the launching of a mentorship program, seeing many OPPA members go on to recognition at the PPA International Photographic Competition, and our group donating nearly $2000 to PPA Charities.

PPA President Rob Behm was in attendance, after I received my commemorative President’s plaque he also presented me with a couple other gifts.

It was a great evening wrapping up a solid year; I already have bigger plans for 2018 which just might include additional OPPA awards and more.

Third Place Commercial Image from PPA

I was surprised and honored last month to find out that I received a prestigious award from the Professional Photographers of America at the annual Grand Imaging Awards ceremony.

My image “The Future is Looking Up” (shown below) was selected as the third place image for 2014 in the Commercial category. Out of thousands of photos entered in PPA’s annual International Photographic Competition last August, the “best of the best” form the pool from which the Grand Imaging Awards winners are selected. I’m flattered that out of all of the commercial images submitted by professional photographers in the organization, mine was selected as the third place image.

I love creating commercial and illustrative photographs that tell a story and I look forward to continuing to develop my portfolio of work with various clients.

To learn more about the Grand Imaging Awards or view the rest of the winners, see this page on PPA’s website.

Aaron Hockley awarded the OPPA President’s Award

As we move into 2015, I’m pleased to announce something that happened at the end of 2014.

As many folks know, I’m on the board of directors for the Oregon Professional Photographers Association. In mid-December I was announced as the recipient of the President’s Award for 2014, one of the highest honors presented by the organization.

The OPPA President’s Award is presented annually to an active member of the organization whose dedication and service benefits the organization, while being of service to the community and a photographer ambassador to the public.

In a region brimming with photographers, I’m honored to have been presented this award and I look forward to another year of living photography. The Oregon Professional Photographers Association is a fantastic group filled with smart, creative individuals, and I can’t wait to continue working with the OPPA membership to provide fellowship, education, and development for photographers in our area.
