OpenStack Third Birthday Party at Sandbox Studios

Over the weekend I realized that somehow I’d never shared the photos from this event here.

OpenStack is a rapidly-growing player in the cloud software space; I had the opportunity to photograph their launch event in 2010 at the Gerding Theater. They returned to Portland this summer for their third birthday party held in conjunction with O’Reilly’s OSCON event. In an evening at Sandbox Studios, I provided event photography for the party including two musical performances, a couple brief speakers, some giveaways, and as with all good birthday parties… cake!

PIE Demo Day – Gerding Theater at the Armory

Earlier this month I had the opportunity to photograph the Demo Day for the third class of startups to “graduate” from the Portland Incubator Experiment program. At Demo Day, company founders have several minutes onstage to tell the story of their company and their product, pitching it to an audience that includes potential investors, tech press, and the public. The stakes are high and it’s always an interesting event to see the stories told (I previously photographed the first and second PIE Demo Days as well).

NALA Convention: Portland Hilton Event Photography

Which much of my work surrounds the tech and startup communities in Portland, I also provide services for other industries. This summer I enjoyed photographing the annual convention for the National Association of Legal Assistants at the Downtown Portland Hilton. The event featured a few hundred attendees, nationwide vendors in a small trade show, keynote presentations, breakout classroom sessions, and a variety of social opportunities.

Three Years Ago: OpenStack Launches

In mid-2010, OpenStack was launched as a partnership between Rackspace and NASA. Wikipedia notes that:

OpenStack is an Infrastructure as a Service (IaaS) cloud computing project that is free open source software released under the terms of the Apache License.

I was honored to capture the OpenStack launch event with event photography at Portland’s Gerding Theater at the Armory. Featuring executive leadership from Rackspace and NASA as well as OpenStack developers, it was a neat event.

Three years later, I’m excited to photograph the OpenStack Summit this week in Portland. Some of the players will be the same; some will be different, but I look forward to seeing the increased crowd, excitement, and buzz around OpenStack and the people, products, and companies involved.

Ignite Portland 10 Photos

Last week I had the opportunity to again be the photography sponsor for Ignite Portland. This was the tenth incarnation of the event and the first in over a year. Attendees saw twenty presentations covering a wide range of topics; lots of socializing happened before the event and during the intermission. Here are a few of my favorite images; you can view the full set on Flickr.
